Speaking to us from his home in Amsterdam, Yuri shared with us how Rutgers’ staff create curricular materials used by teachers across the Netherlands and throughout Europe in educating students about sexuality and sexual health.

“Participating in the INNOVATE program was a great opportunity for me to understand more about the world outside Vietnam because of the diverse nationalities of the participants. The difference in mother tongues as well as cultures made our journey more interesting. “I’ve been using the Global Learning Library this semester and it has been such a boon to my class. I teach Sustainable Environment, which is a course that is innovative and looks to exciting solutions to environmental problems. Having access to a wide variety of experts from all over the globe lets my students see what people are actually doing and how they’re approaching issues of sustainability without having to leave South Dakota. My students have been able to see how our deeper themes of our lecture are applied and also how different perspectives, environments, and cultures, require different solutions.

Having access to the library is far better than finding a YouTube video or Ted Talk because they feel much more personal, and the Q&A sessions were tailored to our needs.

As someone striving for inclusive excellence in STEM, it’s exciting to have such a broad diversity of voices, perspectives, and expertise from my students to see and hear from. Not only that, but because the experts are virtual, students don’t have the financial burdens of travel—or physical burdens for those with other accessibility issues—that normally prevent students from getting these opportunities.

It’s a great resource for so many reasons. I’m glad I included it as part of my course.”

“This trip was life changing for me and I am so happy that I was able to attend. While in Thailand, we visited fresh fruit, flower, and fish markets like none other I have experienced before. We spent three days at a cooking school in Bangkok, which was absolutely amazing. They were so well organized and friendly. We were able to eat at several restaurants serving all sorts of Thai cuisine. One of my favorite restaurants was a roadside restaurant, where they cooked all the food in an outdoor kitchen where we were able to watch them prepare the food from beginning to end. It was very impressive! The people of Thailand were wonderful and very accepting of our group. Our guide was one of the happiest and kindest people I have had the pleasure to meet. The entire program was organized very well and kept the group very busy, with many educational experiences.”
